There are three main types of hearing protection: Ear Muffs, Ear Plugs and Ear Bands.

Ear muffs are designed to fit around the head with a band and have noise-attenuating cups that surround the outer ear to seal out noise.  Ear muffs generally have a size adjuster on the band and come in either over-the-head, behind-the-neck or under-the-chin types.  If you need to be able to frequently remove the hearing protection then an ear muff is right for you.

Ear plugs are designed to fit snugly in the ear canal.  Ear plugs are generally made of a soft pliable material that can be inserted into the ear canal to seal out noise.  Ear plugs come in disposable and non-disposable and are generally the least expensive type of hearing protection.

Ear bands are semi-aural devices that have small pods made out of soft flexible materials that seal off the entrance to the ear canal’s entrance.  They require minimal insertion to be effective.
